Life Skills and Transition Program at East Providence High School
The Life Skills and Transition Program at the East Providence High School approaches functional academics in a community environment that encourages participation and experiential learning. The students in the Life Skills program learn through community experiences such as volunteering, cooking, and shopping. This all encompassing program is geared toward preparing students for transitional based tasks in a classroom setting as well as work readiness opportunities in local area businesses such as Morning Star Bakery and City Bubbles. Life Skills students, who are lead by teachers Kristin Carreiro, Karen Higbie, and Stephanie Edwards, are given valuable volunteer opportunities in order to gain skills that teach self-determination and social learning. In addition to these wonderful teachers, life skills students also have a unique opportunity to work with peer role models through a Partners Program on a daily basis. Partners offer guidance and support to life skills students.
One of the students most exciting business ventures is running and maintaining the school store. The school store is located in the High School cafeteria and is open to the public Monday-Friday during lunch hours. The students manage merchandise, maintain inventory, and perform all of the duties related to the store.
If you have any questions or if your local business would like the opportunity to participate in the Transitions Program work readiness program, please contact Karen Higbie at khigbie@epschoolsri.com.
