RIDOT CLOSING SERIES OF BRIDGES IN EAST PROVIDENCE

UPDATE 4/2/2018:

I-195 Corridor Bridges, East Providence/Providence

As part of the I-195 Corridor Bridges project, the Potter Street Bridge, over I-195 from School Street to Freeborn Avenue in East Providence, is closed until mid-Summer. Traffic can use the nearby Purchase Street or Lyon Avenue Bridges to detour.

Work on the Blackstone Street Bridge, carrying I-95 over Blackstone Street, led to the closure of Blackstone Street East and West, from Allens Avenue to Eddy Street in Providence. A lane shift is in place on I-95 South, from Exit 19 (Eddy Street) to Exit 18 (Thurbers Avenue), and on I-95 North from Exit 18 to Exit 20 (Point Street).

On Monday, April 2, lane shifts are scheduled along I-195 West, from the Washington Bridge to Lyon Avenue, and on I-195 East within the same project limits on Tuesday, April 3. We also plan to close the on-ramps to I-195 West from Veterans Memorial Parkway and Warren Avenue on Wednesday, April 4.

Motorists may experience overnight lane closures for construction along I-195 East and West, from the Broadway on-ramp to the Taunton Avenue on-ramp, and on I-95 North, from Exit 18 to Exit 19 (I-195) and I-95 South, from Point Street to Exit 18, Sunday-Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) today announced it will begin work Monday, March 12, 2018 on a multi-bridge project in East Providence and Providence that will make repairs to five bridges, including replacement of two structurally deficient bridges.

The $20.7 million I-195 Corridor Bridges project begins with the Potter, Purchase and Lyon Avenue bridges in East Providence. These bridges span I-195 and are located close to one another, serving local traffic in the neighborhoods north and south of the highway corridor. RIDOT will be undertaking bridge preservation work on these structures, which involves concrete repairs, bridge joint work and resurfacing.

The Potter Street Bridge will be the first bridge to close on March 12. The Purchase Street and Lyon Avenue bridges will be available for detouring traffic with very little delay. The closure will last approximately three to four months. After reopening the Potter Street Bridge, RIDOT will then close the Purchase Street Bridge. After another three to four months of construction, RIDOT will move to close the Lyon Avenue Bridge. During the project, RIDOT will always keep at least two of the three bridges open until all three are done in Spring 2019.

The project also includes work on the Parkway Ramp Bridge, which carries traffic from Veterans Memorial Parkway and Warren Avenue onto I-195 West, also in East Providence; and the Blackstone Street Bridge, which carries I-95 over Blackstone Street in Providence, located near the Rhode Island hospitals campus.

RIDOT will announce additional construction and detour information for this project in the coming weeks.

All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

The I-195 Corridor Bridges Project was made possible by RhodeWorks, RIDOT's ongoing commitment to repair structurally deficient bridges and bring Rhode Island's transportation infrastructure into a state of good repair, promote economic development, and create jobs.
